Hanging Gardens of Babylon

According to ancient Greek poets, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built near the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq by Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II around 600 BC. The gardens were said to have been planted up to 75 feet in the air on a giant square brick terrace arranged in tiers like a theater. The king is said to have built the towering gardens to appease his lover Amytis’s homesickness for the natural beauty of her home in Media (northwest of present-day Iran). Later writers described how people could walk beneath beautiful gardens perched on high stone pillars.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, also known as the Hanging Gardens of Semiramys, were built around 600 BC. This work is said to have been built by King Nebuchadnezzar II of the kingdom of Babylon (now Iraq) to relieve his wife Amyitis’s nostalgia for her homeland.

Queen Amyitis was the daughter of Cyaraxes, king of the Median people located in the northwestern region of present-day Iran. Being accustomed to majestic mountains and lush green grass, she felt that the land of Mesopotamia (the land that covered Babylon) was bare, flat and illuminated all year round by the sun, which was extremely boring. .

Therefore, Nebuchadnezzar II decided to recreate the image of Amyitis’s hometown by building rooftop gardens, thereby creating the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This architecture was heavily damaged in the second century BC and then most of its ruins were also destroyed when the war between the US and Iraq broke out.

Now Babylon has some ruins left, which are by some estimates larger in scale, and more beautiful.
